Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch team members get local students interested in agriculture careers

SARANAC, Mich. – Hearing stories about farms and fields planted an interest in agriculture in local students’ minds and harvested curiosity about where their food comes from.

March is National Agriculture Month and National Reading Month. To celebrate, team members from Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch partnered with West Michigan Works! to read books to local children and talk with them about careers in agriculture.

“As a fourth-generation family business, we are always looking for ways to inspire the next generation to explore careers in the agriculture industry,” said Stephanie Kempa, chief human resources officer at Herbruck’s. “Engaging with students in this way helps spark curiosity about where our food comes from and inspires them to discover how they can make an impact on our industry and environment.” The Spotlight on Ag Readers (SOAR) initiative aims to highlight and promote the importance of agriculture for kindergarten through fifth grade students. Farmers, food processors and other agribusiness businesses are among those invited to read to local classes, answer questions and lead activities.

Representatives from Herbruck’s read to classrooms in Kent, Montcalm, Ottawa and Ionia counties, including those at Ridgemoor Park Montessori, Lincoln Heights Elementary, Jamestown Lower Elementary School, Saranac Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary School and Ellis Elementary School. The agriculture industry and Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch have a wide range of career paths, including maintenance, production, processing, logistics and more. Herbruck’s team members receive comprehensive benefits in rewarding careers that support their families.
